So, who’s left out there?

With 11 spots still to fill in the 2010 GP2 grid, maybe we can have a bit of fun playing with the silly season rumors.

First, 2009 GP2 drivers still unsigned and may still be running GP2 next year:

  • Alvaro Parente
  • Luiz Razia
  • Luca Filippi
  • Edoardo Mortara
  • Roldán Rodríguez
  • Dani Clos (close to honoring his 2-year contract with Racing Eng…enough budget?)
  • Diego Nunes
  • Jerome D’Ambrosio (is Gravity over?)
  • Johnny Cecotto

Second, the new guys in GP2

  • Christian Vietoris (same Gravity question…)
  • James Jakes (finally?)
  • Bertrand Baguette
  • Other WSR grads?
  • All the lesser known guys who tested… who will put together the money?

The race is on for the 2 Racing Engineering seats, though I hear 1 is pretty much a done deal with Clos.  After that… a run for the “GP2 survivors” and the “GP2 backmarkers”.

Roldan won’t race next year in GP2 according to

  2. Diogo Oliveira says:

    Don’t forget Maldonado and Petrov…

  3. Patrik says:

I think Petrov is aiming at the Campos/meta seat in F1.

I have very mixed feelings about good ‘ol Pastor, he is a good driver but he sometimes gets to stressed and make easy/foulish misstakes.

according to the gravity webpage both Vietoris and D’ambrosio are under thier wings, so maybe they’ll team up at DAMS?

  4. sauber11 says:

What i have heard so far:
Gravity wants to put Ambrosio and Vietoris at RE , but Alfonso wants only Jerome+spanish driver.
    Razia almost\already signed with Rapax.
If Mortara stays in gp2 , it will be Arden.
Cecotto looking for gp3 series .
Petrov will not comeback to gp2 even if F1 fails for him . Maldonado may stay in gp2 and has\had a place reserved for him. Villa will announce his plans in a few days.

    • Diogo Oliveira says:

What I’ve heared is that D.Alfonso wants Álvaro Parente and another one, but things with Virgin and a sponsor are not in a good process, but for sure, Parente is the favourite for to be RE nº1 driver.

  5. Marcin says:

It would be interested, because only seat I can see Maldonado in is Racing Engineering Dallara, if not in there he shouldn’t come back to GP2. He, may have contracy with F1 or ICS team sorted by now though…

Petrov shouldn’t come back anyway, nothing to prove.

Razia and Nunes are good bets as they supposadly have good money backing them, don’t know if they’re as good drivers.

Definitely drivers to watch Maldonado, Parente, Baguette, D’Ambrosio, Clos…

    What about Stefano Coletti ?

  8. Carioca says:

“who will put together the money?” How much money we’re talking about for 2010 anyway? What are they expecting to cost for 2011 and the next 3 years with the new car? Maybe they should be signing contracts considering their survival the next few years…

    • Patrik says:

Ericsson’s Contract with SUpernova is 15M swedish so about €1,5M

      • carioca says:

That’s with GP2 Asia included probably.
Any idea what they’re expecting for next season with the new car?
That’s going to be a tricky one for the teams. We are probably going to see a lot of changes, with new GP3 teams wanting to get in GP2 and regular GP2 “survivors” getting out instead of commiting for another 3 years of financial struggle.

        • Patrik says:

As I read the swedish news it’s 15M for the regular drive, in main series, the GP2 asia in AD is a bonus as the finala wil lgo there(probably a guess from me).

It don’t say anywhere that Marcus will run in Bahrain

  9. seppefan says:

    What about Will Bratt ?
At the Autosport show said was still looking for funds. Lets see how he goes in Abu Dhabi.

  10. Patrik says:

I twittered the GP2 series guys and aparently there is a lot of changes to the lineups so we’ll so who’ll actually race in AD 😀

  11. carioca says:

“who will put together the money”
How much money we’re talking about anyway for 2010?
And how much the teams expect to ask for the next season with the new spec car?
Judging from AutoSprint that calls this the “last year of a dying championship”, teams might be looking for drivers contracts to keep them alive the next year on.

  12. carioca says:

    Sorry for the repeated message.
I just read this strange article on Auto Sprint that confirmed my thoughts. Any insight?

  13. spudy says:

d’Ambrosio and Ho Ping Tung to DAMS as they will be a Renault junior team lievered the same as the F1 team. Which is wrong as Renualt should be impartial in GP2 as they build the engines etc. Renault should not be allowed to run a junior team in GP2! Doesn’t matter really as neither will challenge for the title in a DAMS car. Perez and VDG are both in for Barwa in Abu Dhabi so it looks like we’ll get an early preview of the Barwa, ART, iSport fight. Lets see who comes out top!!

  14. Álvaro Parente situation is very very very difficult, he is not anymore reserve driver for Virgin Racing. His sponsor, Portugal Turism Institute first agreed to sponsor Álvaro, but after refused to sponsor him. Bad attitude from a Portuguese Public Institution.
Now his carreer may be in danger.
