Rookies feeling the pressure?

After a strong start to the season, with rookie wins from Pic and Leimer, the “veterans” have staked their righteous claim in this year’s GP2 Series.  With the past 4 races dominated by drivers with more than one year in GP2, only 2 rookies (Bianchi and Bird) have been on the podium since Barcelona.

Now, 6 races into the season, the 2 ART drivers are the highest-ranked rookies with 11 points, 16 points clear of leader Maldonado and behind other experienced racers.

After the preseason tests and the initial races at Barcelona, it seemed as though the rookies would make a significant contribution to the top spots this year.  As mentioned, Bird and Bianchi are the top rookies, with Pic and Leimer close behind, though they haven’t scored points since their wins.

Other rookies?  Well, Turvey seemed to start off strong but may be feeling the pressure from his consistent teammate and the responsibility that goes with sitting in an iSport.  The biggest disappointments, no doubt, are Christian Vietoris and Marcus Ericsson, both expected only weeks ago to be fighting for top spots and wins throughout the season.

After a rookie champ last year with Nico Hulkenberg, will this year’s champ be a GP2 veteran?  So far, 6 drivers are fighting hard to make this a reality.

Neither Razia nor Clos really is in the battle for the title, and I would give Bianchi more chance then them, but yeah, it will be one of Perez (favourite) Maldonado, vd Garde en maybe Valsecchi who gets the title.

Turvey set the quickest lap in the Sprint race and was quick all weekend he just got nailed by some penalties which I think in the first race were not called for, didn’t look like he weaved to me, Clos was a bit behind him as well. I think Turvey, when it goes right could finish the season as best rookie. Bird though is very impressive!
